Steven Roger Smith was born on April 29, 1968 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Roger and Roma Smith. He chose his way out of this life on February 10, 2017. My Pastor told me he was closer to God now so God could help him with his battles. I pray that is true.
We will have a burial for family and close friends at 2pm on Friday, February 17, 2017 in the Marion Cemetery, 711 East 2700 North, Marion, Utah. On Saturday, February 18, 2017 we will hold a Celebration of Life from 5 to 7pm with a special tribute at 6pm at the Oakley City Hall (960 West Center Street, Oakley, Utah).
Steve started life on a farm in Wanship, Utah and attended kindergarten at North Summit Elementary in Coalville. Ross Siddoway was his bus driver and insisted on taking Steve the entire route. They became good friends. Later Ross would take Steve and his brother, Rob, on all the rides at Lagoon while Imogene and Roma paid the cowboys after the rodeo! (Anyone remember these days?!)
Steve attended Stoker Elementary, Boulton Elementary, South Davis Junior High and eventually graduated in 1986 from Woods Cross High School. He majored in jeeping, beer and girls!
He was an excellent welder, working for the famous Rick Prazen, who he just recently reconnected with. The welding moved to drilling where he became “one hell of a directional driller.” He drilled across the 48 contiguous states working for many companies including Upper Valley, Manual Brothers and eventually his own business Smith and blah blah blah. He was one of the only men who had credentials for directional AND down hole drilling in the state of Utah.
He worked briefly for Triumph Gear Systems, where he made many long and cherished friendships, some of which were cultivated at Woods Cross High School many years before.
Steve was a history buff, connoisseur of good food and fine wines, a diversified listener of all music, a jokester with an unstoppable sense of humor and had one of the brightest shy smiles of anyone. Oh and don't get in a political argument with him as you were sure to lose. He aspired to be the Mayor of Kamas, but we convinced him that Kamas just wasn't ready for him!
Steve mentored a young man through drugs, and that young man is eternally grateful, and is confused as to how this could happen. Aren't we all! (Go Rusty!)
He touched so many lives, as his wives and girlfriends can attest to. He kept them as friends and most have reached out to our family at this dark time. What a memorial in and of itself.
He is survived by his mother Roma, whom he cherished and called his best friend. His father Roger (Holly) of Philadelphia, his daughter Robbyn (Spencer) and granddaughter Alivia, his brother Robert (Jenny and her daughter Rylee), his nephew Major (Kelsie and their daughters JaKiya and McKynlie), his nephew and super star wrestler Mantin aka Manny Lemons (Diana and Mantin’s son Destin), his uncle Arthur Tjaden, his almost dad Carlos Smith, his friend and companion Tara Gage and her children Shelbie (Mason), Linnsie and Hayden, the Smith cousins Cody, Stewart, Wyatt and Justin, and a host of friends who are all in awe of this mess.
He is predeceased by grandparents Lyle and LaRue Smith, his Aunt ShaVon, Grandpa Buzz (Mable) Smith and grandparents Virginia and Lee Tjaden.
We will have a burial for family and close friends at 2pm on Friday, February 17, 2017 in the Marion Cemetery (address). On Saturday, February 18, 2017 we will hold a Celebration of Life from 5 to 7pm with a special tribute at 6pm at the Oakley City Hall (960 West Center Street, Oakley, Utah).
Thank you everyone for supporting his family at this most tragic time. I pray that we can love and admire this man for the wonderful person he was rather than the person his demons drug him to. In lieu of flowers, please take a moment and do something nice for someone, Steve would like that!
