Michael Kenneth (Mike) Cornia, born on February 5, 1956, in Evanston, Wyoming, passed away peacefully at his home on January 4, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was 68 years old. He leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy of compassion and dedication, having spent his career working as an attorney. Mike began his legal journey as a public defender before transitioning to private practice in Evanston, where he was respected for his commitment to justice and his unwavering support for those in need.
A proud alumnus of the University of Wyoming, Mike completed his education with both a Bachelor's and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree. His roots in Evanston, where he also completed his high school education, shaped his values and his deep love for the community.
Mike's personality was defined by his love for his family and friends, especially his beloved son, Sam. Mike was so proud that Sam followed in his footsteps into the legal profession. He also loved his adopted children, Hope Bills, Cody Thompson, and Jace Short and their children, who called him grandpa. He often spoke fondly of the "basement boys," a group of kids that spent countless hours in his house and brought him pride and joy. After retiring from law, Mike found solace and happiness in the simple pleasures of life, such as woodworking, cooking and sharing adventures in the great outdoors, including hiking and camping in the desert.
He is survived by his son, Sam (Destiney), brother, Paul (Julie), and sister, Carol Ashton (Denis) along with many nieces and nephews who will carry forward his spirit of kindness. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Wilma (Bower) Cornia, and his siblings, Claudia Jean Bills and Jerry Cornia.
Mike's contributions to his community and the love he shared with his family and friends will always be remembered with great respect and affection. His life was a tapestry of advocacy, caring, and camaraderie, woven with moments that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.
A party in celebration of Mike's life will be arranged for a future date at the Bear River State Park in Evanston.
