With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother Mary May Smith Verley, who peacefully left this world on February 17, 2025. Born on May 21, 1939, in Salida, Colorado, Mary lived a full and beautiful life, touching the hearts of all who knew her.
Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She married the love of her life, Jim Verley, on April 15, 1964, and they were later sealed for time and eternity in the Salt Lake City Temple. A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she dedicated her life to service, teaching in Primary and Young Women’s and serving in the Relief Society Presidency.
Mary was also a dedicated member of her community, known for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering spirit. She owned a successful floral shop in Lyman, Wyoming, and worked as a guard at the women’s prison in Evanston, a security correction officer, and a security guard for Allied Chemical. No matter where she was, Mary brought warmth, laughter, and love to everyone she met.
She is survived by her children—Tonya Hartman, Shona (Frankie) Schuttemeier, Charles Frederick (Alice) Verley, Rex (Janine) Verley, and Konra (Kevin) Williams—as well as her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary’s love, wisdom, and joyful spirit will forever remain in our hearts. She was preceded in death by her parents Charlie and Catherine Cooper, Smith, sister Irene Wilson, brother Glenn (Dutch) Smith, father-in-law Herbert and step-mother in law Rita Verley, mother in law Bobby Overguard, sisters-in-law Candice Lantz, Rita (Bird)) Case, brothers-in-law Robert Verley, Dennis Verley, son in law Dan Hartman.
A viewing to honor Mary’s life will be held on Friday, February 28, 2025, from 6-8pm @ the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located in Lyman Wyoming.
A service to honor and celebrate Mary’s life will be held on Saturday March 1, 2025 @ 11 am. At the Lyman LDS Church in Lyman, Wyoming. We invite all who knew and loved her to join us in remembering the incredible woman she was.
Though she is no longer with us, Mary’s legacy of love and faith will continue to shine through the lives she touched. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
