Martha Adell Hatch Westmoreland Woodard was born June 14, 1935, in Ogden, Utah, to Ivan Hile Hatch and Mary Elmina Birch. Finally, she said “I’m ready to die!” and 8 days later she passed away due to natural causes from dementia on March 15, 2018, at Barrington Place Alzheimer’s Care Center in Clinton Utah.
Adell was one of four children. Her mother passed away when she was just two years old and she was raised by her father and grandmother with an additional three stepbrothers and several aunts and uncles. She graduated from Ogden High School, Class of 1953.
She married James Ray Westmoreland on June 14, 1955. They had 4 children; James Ray (Melodee) Westmoreland, Bobby (Julie) Westmoreland, Cindy (Kevin) Cannon, and Judy (Daniel) Lewis. After 11 years of marriage, James Ray passed away at the young age of 39.
She married Sherman A. Woodard, June 27, 1967. He brought 6 children to the marriage; Dean (Sue) Woodard, Sherry Woodard, Nina Wakkuri, Steven (Tamara) Woodard, Janie (Greg) McGovern and Bret (Shannon) Woodard. Being a mother to 10 children was her true calling in life. She sincerely believed, “Biology is the least of what makes someone a mother” (Oprah Winfrey). Sherman passed away August 6, 2011. They were married 44 years.
Adell was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She served joyfully in many church callings, but she most enjoyed serving in the Lord’s Temple in Las Vegas, Nevada and Salt Lake City, Utah.
Adell’s work ethic was articulate and she used to say, “A job worth doing is worth doing well!” She would put a little elbow grease into it, especially when it came to her infamous wedding cakes! Yet, when it was time to play, she brought new meaning to the word! She was the funnest mom on the block! She would jump on the trampoline, fish, and attend the Kamas Rodeo/ Demolition Derby with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mother loved “everything Pigs”. We all added to her collection and she had many! She had an endless variety of talents, but what she did best was collect friends. There was not a soul who met Adell that didn’t love her! She was charitable, always ready to lend a hand or give a kind word. Mom...you will forever be in the hearts of your 10 children, 46 grandchildren and 64 great grandchildren!
Adell is survived by her little Sister Faun (Doug) Seaman, Brother Ted (LaReta) Kelso,
her Children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She is preceded in Death by her parents, husbands, brothers, sisters and oldest grandchild (Travis Gailey).
We wish to express our sincere gratitude for the loving care our mother received from the staff of Barrington Place Alzheimer's Care Center, Elk Meadows Assisted Living Center in Oakley, Utah, Encompass Hospice and Dignity Hospice. You are all truly angels on earth!
