Louis Markis Stuart was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-
grandfather, and friend. He passed away June 2nd, 2015 in Evanston,
Wyoming, at the age of 102.
He was born in Woodruff, Utah, December 12, 1912, the 9th of 11 children
of James R and Minnie Amelia (Cox) Stuart. He grew up in the Bear River Valley.
His mother passed away when he was 7 years old. After her death, he and his
younger siblings were raised by his older sisters.
He graduated from South Rich High School, and afterwards went to one
semester at Utah State. He served a mission in the Western states, and later
served a mission with his wife Joan in San Diego, Calif., teaching the people
from Cambodia and Laos. They also served in the Ogden Temple for several
years. Louis and Joan were very faithful members in the LDS church.
After coming home from his mission, he returned home to Woodruff and
found the love of his life Joan Peterson Stuart. They were married in the
Salt Lake Temple on December 22nd, 1939. Five sons were born to them
Richard, Dean, Kent, Ron, and Bill.
Louis and Joan lived most of their life in Woodruff, Utah, on the family
ranch. He had the distinction of being the last homesteader in Rich County,
Utah. He was very instrumental in building the Woodruff Creek Reservoir,
and spent many hours seeing the completion of the project. He was also
county commissioner for 8 years. He was always active on the ranch and
still mowing hay and helping in the hayfield at 101.
He is survived by, his sons Richard, Kent (Judy), Ron (Kayleen), and Bill
(Cindy) and daughter in law Shirley Olsen. He and Joan had 22
grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren. He was the last surviving sibling
in his family and was preceded in death by his wife Joan and son Dean, his
parents, and his brothers and sisters .
Funeral service will be on Saturday, June 6, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. in the Woodruff LDS Ward Chapel. Viewing will be at the church on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Woodruff Cemetery.
