James "Tommy" Thompson

March 22, 1926 — January 10, 2022

Kamas

James “Tommy” Haston Thompson was born into the loving arms of John Sevy Thompson and Ina Alvey in Boulder, Utah on March 22, 1926.  He lived in Escalante in his earlier childhood years and later moved to Panguitch, Utah where he grew up with his 6 siblings. Tommy started herding sheep at 12 years old and sometimes caused a little trouble. He married the love of his life, Margaret Jane Lee, and became a stepfather to Janet and Bobby. On October 26, 1945, they were blessed with a baby boy, Preston Lee Thompson, who sadly passed away as an infant. James “Jim” Haston Thompson Junior was born into the family on June 3, 1949. Their children were their joy.

They eventually moved to Kamas Utah where Tommy spent the happiest days on his horse in the mountains with his family. He loved and lived for his family, good food, and good stories. He had many professions and hobbies in his life - sheepherder, trapper, sheriff, school bus driver, pilot, animal rescuer, saddle maker, restaurant owner, but he was proudest to call himself a cowboy. In his retired years, Tommy and Margaret spent their winters in Tuscan, Arizona, where they made many friends and served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

On May 21, 2006, Tommy lost the love of his life, Margaret Jane Lee Thompson, and has been patiently waiting to hold her in his arms again. Thanks to his grandson, Tommy, and his beautiful wife Jill, he was able to live and die in the place he loved the most, his home in Kamas, Utah.

On January 10, 2022, Tommy was able to return home to his Savior, Jesus Christ, and was happily reunited with his family members including his wife, Margaret Jane Lee Thompson; sons, Preston Lee Thompson, James “Jim” Haston Thompson Jr., George “Bobby” Robert Sherratt; daughter, Janet Ann Sherratt; and his parents, siblings and many friends, and animals.

Tommy leaves behind his two daughters-in-law, Karen Cowley (Tim), and Bonnie Sherratt, as well as his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

He was the most loved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandfather, and friend in the whole world. He will be remembered for his love of life, good humor, songs, stories, and quiet strength. He will be dearly missed and his legacy will always be remembered.

Funeral services will be held at the Kamas 2nd Ward chapel, 100 West Center Street, Kamas, Utah, on Saturday, January 15th. The viewing will be held from 9:00 -10:45 am. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at the Heber City Cemetery. Services will be live-streamed via zoom which can be accessed through zoom.us
