Our Cowboy returned home to the loving arms of his Heavenly Father December 29th 2012.
Howard Paul Peterson was born on March 9, 1924 in Glenwood Utah to Lafayette and Marvel Peterson. He attended school in Glenwood and was very close to his cousins and family members that lived in the area. He was a very active lad in the community. Everyone knew him due to his pranks and his willingness to help those around him. He was always willing to help hay, shear sheep, milk cows and thin beets. When he was growing up he would sing with his mother at all of the area funerals. Howard loved music and would play the harmonica for his friends and family.
Howard began rodeoing at a very early age. He competed in 1939 at the Turtle Association (now known as the PRCA) Finals in New York at Madison Square Garden.
In February of 1944 he enlisted as an apprentice seaman in the US Navy. While serving he was a Radar Tech and a Gunner. He was injured in battle. He spent 9 months in a New Guinea Naval Hospital and 4 more months in the US Naval hospital in San LeAndro CA. He had to learn how to walk all over again. When he was discharged in Oct of 1945 he was still using crutches. Howard was told that he would never ride horses again, and boy did he prove them wrong!
When he was released he returned to his home town. He began working for a cattleman by the name of Alton Morrell. He met Beverly and they ran away to Provo Utah getting married on April 6, 1949. This marriage was solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple on April 11, 1991. Howard and Beverly herded cattle and broke horses in the Southern Utah Desert the first few years of their Marriage. They lived in a tent in the summer and a sheep camp in the winter. In 1951 they moved to Evanston to begin working the family ranch that Beverly’s father had purchased on Hilliard Flat. Howard has always been involved in managing cattle and sheep ranches and worked for Fred Myers and JR Broadbent for many years. In 1987 Howard began working as a brand inspector until June 30, 2010. He loved to work and be involved with livestock. After moving to Evanston he was blessed with two children - a daughter and son.
Howard was a co instigator in starting 4-H in Uinta County. He loved working with the youth whether 4-H, church or just being around the youth in general. He was a 4-H leader for over 30 years and was still helping his great grand children at the time of his death.
Howard served in several positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Howard loved to hunt and fish. Camping was a way of life. He always took his kids, grand kids and great grand kids with to teach them the love of the land, the beauty of the earth and to be grateful for everything they were blessed with. Howard’s family was the most important blessing he and Beverly had.
Howard was proceeded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, 1 brother and 2 brother-in-laws. He is survived by his wife Beverly of 63 years, children Kathy (Glen) Defa and Ken (Sharon) Peterson. He has 8 grandchildren and their spouses and 15 great grandchildren with one on the way and one great great grandchild.
Howard had some amazing adventures and could tell you some pretty unbelievable stories, and you just never really knew if they were true or not. Good ride Cowboy, Good Ride!!
A viewing will be held Thursday January 3rd 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Crandall Funeral Home. The funeral services will be held Friday January 4th at 11:00am at the Elm St chapel in Evanston, Wyoming with a viewing one hour prior to the services. Howard will be laid to rest in the Evanston Wyoming Cemetery.
