Glendon S Jewkes died peacefully Wednesday May 13, 2015 of causes related to old age. He was 90 years old. He was many things in his long life -- athlete, soldier, miner, coach, teacher, forester, firefighter, adviser, and mentor -- and he excelled at all of them. He was best at being a husband, father and grandfather.
Glendon was born in the now-defunct mining town of Wattis, Utah on January 22, 1925 to William Andrew Jewkes and Emina Estella Scovill. He was the youngest of twelve children, all of whom were raised in Orangeville. He was in the last graduating class of Central High School where he was a star of the basketball team. After graduating in 1943, he was drafted into the United States Army and served valiantly in the 31st Infantry Division during World War II, participating in the liberation of New Guinea, Morotai, and Mindanau.
After his military service, he married Yvonne Polve on March 27, 1948. They were later sealed in the Manti LDS Temple. They lived in Kenilworth, Utah where Glendon was a miner until he entered Brigham Young University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and played on the baseball team. He lived the rest of his life in Kamas, Utah where he coached numerous athletic teams and taught English at South Summit High School for 32 years, deeply affecting the lives of countless students. In the summers, he worked for the United States Forest Service and was well known for his firefighting expertise and his knowledge of the Uinta Mountains.
Glendon is survived by a brother Donald Jewkes and his wife Julia; two sons, James and his wife Kathleen (Kate) of Murray, John and his wife Marianne (Reggie) of Taylorsville; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife and parents; brothers Calvin and Rex; sisters Ada, Ora, Silva, Reah, Leah, Erma, Ruth, and Mabel.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday May 19, 2015 at 1:00 PM in the Kamas First Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 100 West Center Street in Kamas. Friends may call from 11:30 AM until 12:45 PM. Interment in the cemetery in Marion follows the funeral.
