Gertrude Oliver Gines passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on April 9, 2025. She was born on May 24, 1929, in Marion, Utah, to Carl Edward and Mollie Louise Heimburger Oliver. Gertrude attended elementary school in Marion and completed high school in Kamas, graduating from South Summit High School in 1947. On October 2, 1953, she married Anthon L. Gines and moved to her home in Kamas, where she lived for 71 years. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple on July 2, 1964.
Gertrude grew up as the youngest of two children in Marion, Utah. She and her sister, Virginia, worked many hours helping their dad on the family farm. She often said that working on the farm taught her the value of hard work, a lesson that remained with her throughout her life.
Gertrude had a deep love for the outdoors and spent much of her time tending to her vegetable garden and flower beds. During the summer, she could often be found in her yard irrigating the lawn; she loved to play in the water. She took great pride in maintaining her yard and keeping it beautiful. She loved working on the farm and spent much of her life taking care of it.
For 38 years, 8 months and 11 days Gertrude worked as the secretary at South Summit Elementary School in Kamas. She loved working with children and truly enjoyed her role. She retired at the age of 84, when Macular Degeneration made it difficult for her to see well enough to continue.
As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gertrude held various callings throughout her life. She cherished living in Kamas and being an active part of the community.
Gertrude had a passion for sports. She enjoyed playing softball in her youth and even as an adult, developing remarkable strength from her years of farm work. She also loved following local sports teams, including South Summit and college teams, and especially the University of Utah. During basketball season, she could often be found cheering on the Utah Jazz.
Above all, Gertrude’s greatest love was her family. She deeply valued her children and grandchildren, finding joy in attending their events and always remembering their birthdays. Visiting with each of them brought her immense happiness. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren gave her a variety of special names, such as Grandma Gines, Grandma Gert, Grandma GG, and even Margaret (a story in itself). Friends and family affectionately called her Gertie. She loved all these names, but what she treasured most were the loved ones behind them.
Gertrude is survived by her three children: Tresa (Gary) Butler, Glen L. (Colette) Gines, and Larry A. (Marci) Gines; 12 grandchildren: Bret, Spencer, Julie, Heather, Bart, Cassurie, Shireece, Shauntel, Tyrell, Britney, Madison, and Kennedi. She was blessed to have 25 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister.
In her later years, Gertrude was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. She remained determined to stay active, although the disease made this increasingly challenging. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the close friends and ministering angels who helped care for her during this time, whether through phone calls or visits. Special thanks also go to the staff at Family Tree in Morgan, Utah, for their compassionate care, and to A+ Hospice, especially Thomas and Christina, for their support and kindness.
Funeral services will be conducted by Crandall Funeral Home in Kamas, Utah. A viewing will take place at the Kamas 1st Ward chapel (100 West Center Street, Kamas, UT 84036) on April 17, 2025 from 6 to 8 pm and on April 18, at 11:00 to 11:45AM.
