Gerald Herman

Gerald Joseph “Jerry” Herman, passed away January 5, 2013 in Evanston, Wyoming at the age of 78 after a valiant battle against cancer.
He was born November 9, 1934 in Mountain View, Wyoming to George Francis and Violet A. (Lane) Herman.
He married the love of his life, Joy Ann Sorensen in Randolph, Utah on December 15, 1953. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple on July 1, 1989.
Jerry served his country from 1953 to 1957 in the United States Navy.  He worked as a blacksmith in the Union Pacific Railroad shops and then became a heavy equipment operator where he worked building the Interstate highway from Utah through Cheyenne, WY.  He then worked at the Kemmerer Coal Mine for 28 years.  After retirement Jerry did mechanic work so that he could stay busy.
He was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing. He particularly enjoyed spending time with his family and taught all of them to love and appreciate nature.  They will always remember the many camping and hunting trips spent with grandpa and the knowledge that he passed on to them. He was very mechanically minded and enjoyed helping neighbors and even total strangers if they needed cars, lawn mowers etc. repaired.  He loved doing service for others and was happiest when he was busy.  He loved to read and had a great desire for knowledge.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he held many positions.  He and his wife Joy filled a service mission at the Bishop’s Storehouse for 3 ½ years.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joy; daughter Julie Kay Jones; a son John Golden Herman, all of Evanston, 8 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. He was a selfless and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend and will be missed greatly.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother George; and a sister Genevieve Benton; two infant brothers, John and Terrence and an infant sister Dorothy.
Funeral services will be on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the Evanston LDS Stake Center, 1225 Morse Lee Street. Friends may call at the Crandall Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday from 10 to 10:40 a.m.
Interment with military honors will follow in the Evanston City Cemetery.
