Evelyne South

October 26, 1934 — March 26, 2022

Evelyne Josiane Schmid South, 87, died peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones on Saturday, March 26th, 2022 at The Family Tree Assisted Living in Morgan, Utah.

She was born on October 26th, 1934 in Geneva, Switzerland, the only child of Marcel Pierre and Cecile Louise Schmid. After her school years she worked as a nanny in England where she became proficient in English. Because of this and her ability to speak multiple languages, she secured a job as an international telephone operator, often working for the United Nations.

During a ski holiday in Davos, Switzerland, she met a handsome, young American soldier, Burton South. As told in fairy tales, it was love at first sight. After being released from the Army, Burton returned to Geneva, Switzerland and married our Mom on May 26th, 1956. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City Temple. They made their home in Evanston, Wyoming and were blessed with four children: Eric, Kim, Cindy and Clay.

Evelyne adjusted well to her life in Wyoming. She loved Burton's family, the small town of Evanston and spending summers in the woods as she supported Dad in the family logging operation. She found much joy working in her yard and had a knack for making things grow. She was an excellent cook, housekeeper, enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting and reading. Her greatest joy was her family and she loved each opportunity to spend time with them.

Mom joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1959 and was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. She served faithfully in many capacities and easily loved those she served. The highlight of her church service was serving a mission with her favorite companion in the Canada, Halifax Mission from September 1999 to October 2000. She was a good neighbor and friend to many.

Mom is survived by a son Eric (Sherrie) South of Evanston, WY; daughter Kim (Scott) Hall of Eagar, AZ; and daughter Cindy (David) Matthews of Evanston, WY; 16 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren with 2 more coming soon, 1 great-great grandson; her loving sisters-in- law Gayle (Gordon) Stuart, Connie (Jon) Lunsford and JoAnne (Gaylon Thornock, many nieces and nephews and her Switzerland family Monique Schmid, Josette Lambert, Severine Mengis, Arnaud (Anne) Lambert and Jaques(Rosita) Schmid.

Mom is preceded in death by her parents Marcel and Cecile Schmid, husband Burton L. South, son Clay Allen South, great-grandaughter Afton Cecile Blackham, great-grandsons Weston Bradley Buchanan and Max David Matthews; Glenna and Gene Jones, Donna and Bob Dickerson, Dan and Marie South and Pierre Lambert.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 2, at 11 a.m. at the Elm Street Church located on 251 Elm Street. A viewing will be held Friday, April 1 from 6-8 p.m. at the Elm Street Church and Saturday from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. prior to the services. Interment will be in the Evanston City Cemetery.

Our family would like to extend our heartfelt love and gratitude to the caring staff at The Family Tree in Morgan, UT for their loving care of our Mom and for treating all of us as family. We also appreciate A Plus Hospice for their compassionate care for Mom in her final days.
