Ellen Mary Sundquist Oehler was granted her angel wings on August 22, 2014 after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. Her final days were spent surrounded by the support of her family and friends at her home in Mountain View, WY.
Ellen was born January 28, 1946 to Lloyd and Emma Sundquist in American Fork, Utah. She was one of 18 children that the couple had. As a child, one of Ellen’s favorite pastimes was to ride her bike, with her younger sisters, up and down the banks of the Provo River even though she was terrified of water.
On April 02, 1963 she married her true love and soul mate, Gerald J Oehler in Spanish Fork, Utah. Ellen and Gerald immediately started their life together by having three children: Melayna, Gerald and Carl. Work and life brought them from Kamas, Utah to Mountain View, Wyoming where they have resided since 1972. In 1981, the couple’s life was changed once more when Melayna gave birth to Ellen’s first grandchild. She thoroughly enjoyed life as a grandma. In 2000, her life changed yet again when she became a great-grandma.
Ellen’s joy in life came from spending time with her ever-growing family whether it be at her kitchen table, sitting around a campfire, or fishing at Quarter Corner. Her other interests were cooking meals, gardening, hunting and reading the latest romance novel. Anyone stopping by her house for a visit could count on her cooking them a meal, whether they were hungry or not. There wasn’t a day that her oven wasn’t cooking something for someone. It seemed her mission in life was to make sure everyone was taken care of, oftentimes forgetting to take time for herself.
In June of 2014 she was diagnosed with cancer and she began the battle for her life. She met this challenge head on and with the bravery of a soldier headed off to war. She fought this battle on her own terms the whole way until it was time to hang up her apron and turn the oven off.
Ellen is survived by her husband of 51 years, Gerald J. Oehler; daughter: Melayna (Wayne) Reynold; sons: Gerald (Amy) Oehler and Carl (Bccky) Oehler; 7 grandchildren: Allen, Treisa, ShaDawn, Taven, Cody, Aaron and Amber; and 8 great-grandchildren: Aubrey, Oakley, Haygen, Valisity, Klohie, Aspen, Wesson and Riggin; sisters: Emma, Rea. Edna, Chris and Karin; brothers: Lloyd and Floyd.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Emma, and by numerous brothers and sisters.
Services in her honor will be Wednesday, August 27 at 11:00 at the Mountain View LDS Church. Visitation will be held at the church Tuesday, August 26 from 6:00-8:00 and an hour before services on Wednesday. Burial will follow at the Fort Bridger Cemetery.
