Dorothy Harris

July 26, 1930 — March 13, 2020

Evanston, WY

Dorothy Elaine Harris passed away on Friday, March 13, 2020 in Evanston Wyoming.  She was born on July 26, 1930 in Evanston Wyoming to John James and Dorothy Brown Martin, the oldest of five children.

Elaine married James Earl Harris on July 2, 1948 in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity by Apostle Mark E Petersen.   She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all of her life and served in many callings including Relief Society President twice, Gospel Doctrine teacher for ten years, an early morning seminary teacher and a temple worker in the Ogden Utah Temple for several years.

Her family lived in Woods Cross, Utah for several years where she began her schooling.  They moved to Hilliard, Wyoming to a ranch, where she spent the remainder of her youth.  She attended a one room schoolhouse and rode the wagon or sleigh to school every day.   She worked hard on her parents’ ranch milking 40 cows every morning and night and also worked hard in the hay fields.  When she began high school, she moved to Evanston to live with an aunt.  She finished 11th grade before leaving school for marriage.  She graduated from high school by taking the GED in 1969 when her two oldest children graduated.

Her greatest love was being a mother and homemaker.   She loved each of her five children dearly and loved taking care of them.  She also always kept a lovely, clean, well-organized house.   After she received her high school diploma, she went to work at the state hospital as a nursing assistant and then was asked by Dr. Karn to join the secretarial pool, where she worked for several years.  She also worked at the Welling Auto Dealership, and then was a secretary in the school district for many years until she retired.

She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, who delighted in her children and grandchildren.  She enjoyed making baby blankets for each new grandchild and great-grandchild as they were born.  She loved people and everyone she met became a friend.

Elaine is survived by her children:  John (Kim) Harris of Orem, Utah; Donna (Wayne) Madsen of Ypsilanti, Michigan; Garth (Sharon) Harris of Herriman, Utah; Dan (Christine) Harris of Idaho Falls, Idaho and Mark (Kari) Harris of Casper, Wyoming; eighteen grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren and her brother Aaron (Nancy) Martin of Almy, Wyoming and her sister Charlotte Hooton of Union, Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, brothers Merrill James and John Westley Martin and grandson, Tyler Harris.
