Burt Ball

May 11, 1928 — August 4, 2013

Burt Lloyd Ball
Burt “Lloyd” Ball 85, of Evanston passed away Sunday, August 4th 2013 surrounded by his family.  He was born May 11th, 1928 in Coalville, Utah to Sheriff Burt & Lillian Ida Diston Ball.  He was one of 10 children, four brothers, Ray, Gerald, James and Quentin along with 5 sisters, Edna, Thelma, Marjorie, Gladys and Colleen.
He and his best friend, Don Stonebraker, moved to Evanston to work on the Union Pacific Rail Road, a career that would take him to various towns in WY, UT and eventually a promotion to B&B Supervisor and moving to North Platte, NE.  While working in Rawlins in 1956, he met Anna Marie Nelson and they married settling in Evanston, the place he called home, to raise their family.  Together they had 4 children Kevin, Kathy, Chris and Jennifer.   Dad worked on the Railroad and spent the early years of his career living on a crew car in various towns.  On weekends he always returned home, the 63’ Chevy pickup was loaded and the family would head to the mountains with friends before heading back on Sunday night.  Hunting and fishing were some of his greatest loves and he was an awesome fly fisherman.
Lloyd served in the Korean War and was a member of VFW Post 4280.  Dad was very proud to have served his country and taught that love to his children.  He was a member of the VFW flag committee and took the position to heart.  Many family dinners were rearranged so Dad could put out flags.  Memorial Day was a special time for him as he drove the posts for the flags along the road entering the cemetery and placing flags on the graves.
Dad loved sports of any kind.   He was an avid boxer and basketball player.  While first working in Evanston, he and a bunch of his carpenter buddies laid the gym floor in what is now the Evanston, WY Stake Center so they could play ball.  He loved football, baseball and was a devoted Boston Red Sox fan.  He loved rodeo and spent a number of years riding bareback and saddle bronc in local rodeos.
Ranching was also a passion for him along with his little red Dodge truck.  He spent many of his retirement years working on the Barker ranch in Piedmont.  Dad loved the ranch, he and that little red truck made numerous trips to hay, feed, and check up on calves or lambs.  It was a “job” that brought him happiness and helped him to heal after the loss of family members and friends.  Thanks to the Gary Barker family for allowing Dad to have so much happiness.
Lloyd is survived by his daughters Kathy, Thornton, CO; Chris (Larry) Lym, Evanston;  Jennifer Boggess , Tooele, UT; his daughter in law, Sandy of Evanston and 3 grandchildren; Meagan Lym, Ajay and Annalisa Boggess, brother; Gerald Ball Coalville, Utah, sister; Collen Schultz Follett, texas. He was preceded in death by wife Anna, son Kevin, son in law Anthony, parents, 3 brothers and 4 sisters.
Funeral Services will be held at the Crandall Funeral home on Thursday, August 8th at 11:00 AM with a viewing 1 hour before.  A viewing will also be held on Wednesday night from 6-8.  Burial will be in the Evanston City Cemetery.   In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to the VFW Post 4280 Flag Fund.
